この本は、稀代の刺青師“彫甚”の仕事を収めた写真集である。
刺青師“彫甚”を現代の歌川国芳と称する美術評論家がいる。その奔放な創作スタイルが、そうしたイメージを想起させるらしい。彼の仕事は、素肌に筆で直接モチーフを自在に描くことからはじまる。多くの彫師が、型絵を体に押し当てトレースすることで下絵を写すのに対し、この最初のプロセスが大きく異なる。刺青を施すキャンバスとしての対象となる人の体つきや骨格を見定めて、デッサン力に裏付けられた図柄が描かれるのである。こうした技法によって、“彫甚”の仕事は、人体と一体化した刺青として高く評価されている。
写真家須藤昌人は、日本の刺青に惹かれ長年その映像美を追い求めている。ライティング、ポージング、そしてマジックミラー、水面など創意に溢れた取り組みによって、撮影の対象である彫師の作品を写真家固有の創造美へと変換し、視覚的な刺青の美を芸術の域にまで高め、私たちに提示してくれている。

This is a collection of HORIJINs photographs of Jpanese tattooing arts.
A tattoo artist HORIJIN is called UTAGAWA Kuniyoshi in today by some critics because of his bohemian style. His tattoo begins with drawing motif on the body directly. Most tattoo artists differ from him. They copy original designs by tracing. HORIJIN draws designs with making sure a build and shape of objects. His designs prove his sketching technique. His tattoo is highly regarded as design having a sense of unity with the body. This point makes his work standing out.
Tattoo photographer SUDO Masato was fascinated by Japanese tattoo, and over ten years he has pursed that beauty of image. By original idea, for example lighting and posing and framing, he transformed tattoo artist’s work original creation beauty, lifted the arts from visual beauty and suggested it to us.
